Why Designers Start with Art
Mar 12, 2026
When you walk into a room, your eye is always searching for a place to land. Interior designers call that the focal point—and it sets the tone for everything else in the space.
Most people start decorating with paint, furniture, or throw pillows. But there’s a much easier (and more personal) way to create a beautiful room:
Start with one piece of art you truly love.
Hang it where your eye naturally goes first when you enter the room—over the sofa, above the bed, at the end of a hallway, or on that big blank wall you keep meaning to do something about. That piece becomes the visual anchor for the entire space.
From there, let the artwork lead the way:
- Pull 1–2 complimentary colors from the piece for your pillows, rug, or throw blankets
- Echo its mood in your lighting (soft and calm, bright and energetic, etc.)
- Repeat subtle shapes or textures from the artwork in accessories and furniture
Suddenly the room feels intentional and cohesive, not just “decorated.”
The best part? Art carries a story that mass‑produced decor never will. A photograph of a place you love, a memory from a trip, or a scene that makes you exhale at the end of the day brings emotion into the room every time you walk by.
If your home has a wall that feels a little empty or a room that feels “unfinished,” try this:
Choose one piece of art that makes you pause, hang it where your eye lands first, and let everything else follow its lead.
