"Royal Tern" was photographed on Tybee Isalnd, Georgia in January of 2020.
The Royal Tern is a beautiful gull-like coastal bird that likes to hang out at the beach. Their orange bill and wild hairdo looking feathers on their head make them stand out from the gulls. They feed off of small fish that it can catch along the shoreline. It can also get pretty loud during mating season as they seem to be screeching at each other at times. Their unique sounds during this time will remind you of the beach.
To capture scenes like this, I'm usually in a kneeling or even laying position on the beach to try to get a low angle of view. I get as close as possible without disturbing the birds. If I sense that the birds are becoming a little panicky, I'll back off to a safer distance. These birds are harassed enough on the beach and some tourist will walk or run through a beach colony of these coastal birds without thinking twice. Some of these birds are already threatened or even endangered, so it is best to let them have their space. Above all, do not feed them human food which is not good for any wild animal.
Royal Terns and other coastal birds can make an awesome fine art piece to round out your home or office decor with a touch of a Coastal Georgia peaceful beach scene. Don't be afraid to add them to your wall to bring a touch of peace and beauty to it.
