"Darien Shrimp Boats B&W" was photographed in May of 2021 in Darien, Georgia.
The Darien Shrimp Boats have long been a photographer's magnet, not to mention the wonderful fresh shrimp that they catch and provide to the local restaurants.
They do face many challenges though. The rising cost of fuel and maintenance doubled with cheap imports from foreign countries have made the business very, very challenging. Not to mention it is very hard, dangerous work.
Another challenge is the condominium developers who purchase the land and then claim waterfront rights. They eventually tell the shrimpers to move their boats so they can build their own docks for their customer's use. Scenes like these are completely gone in Thunderbolt, Georgia where over forty shrimp boats once docked before the developers came.
One way to help local shrimpers out is to demand "Wild Georgia Shrimp" when you eat shrimp at a restaurant. It's a label that supposed to be reserved only for the restaurants who do indeed buy ONLY from the local shrimpers.
