"Barred Owl Perch" was photographed in December of 2017 at the Audubon Center at Beidler Forest.
Yes, I know, Beidler Forest is not in Coastal Georgia, it's in the low country of South Carolina. However, we do have plenty of Barred Owls in Coastal Georgia. I just haven't had the opportunity to photograph them here yet. Beidler Forest is only a two hour drive north on I-95 from Savannah, Georgia and is well worth the drive. It is the largest virgin cypress-tupelo swamp in the world, boasting cypress trees as old as 1000 years.
The Barred Owl or "Hoot Owl" is a nocturnal predator bird which preys on small mammals and have been know to go after other small birds, reptiles, and amphibians. It took us all day to spot this owl in this forest, and after spotting it, it seemed remarkably camouflaged for it's size. It was as if we could have walked right by it without ever spotting it.
I think this will make a great fine art wall art piece for anyone who likes Coastal Georgia or low country wildlife. The owl spirit represents wisdom, intuition, insight, the messenger, mystery, freedom, secrets, stealth, and vision.
