"Wild Cumberland Horse" was photographed on Cumberland Island in April, 2018.
The wild horses of Cumberland Island are one of Coastal Georgia's hidden treasures. They are a sight to behold. Only on Cumberland Island can wild horses be found in Georgia. With the wild horses and all the plentiful wildlife found on this island, the diversity of the ecology, along with the mansions and ruins of mansions built by the Carnegie family, I call this one of Georgia's most enchanting islands.
The wild horses of Cumberland Island, like other coastal herds along the east coast, are survivors. Brought to the island as domestic horses used for riding, hunting, pulling plows or carriages, they were released into the wild when the property was abandoned. The horses reverted to their natural wild state and have survived for decades off the the grasses and fresh water they find on the island. These horses are not fed or cared for by humans and live a total wild and natural life. They are born in the wild and die in the wild and are survivors. Consider the harsh environment and ecology that these horses have lived through. Droughts, hurricanes, flooding, heat, and freezing cold temperatures, these horses have survived it all. Like other wild animals, they should also be observed from a distance. Do not feed or try to get to close to one of these wild creatures. You would not want to be attacked by a horse, but they are beautiful to see and admire.
