"Great Egret Plumage" was photographed in...
"Great Egret Plumage" was photographed in March of 2023 at Pinckney Island Wildlife Refuge.
It is amazing to see these birds in their mating plumage each spring. The males grow out these elegant long white feathers and then display them above the nest that they are working on in hopes of attracting a female. Once they attract a female to the nest, it becomes her job to work on the nest while the male goes and brings more sticks back to the nest. Eventually, she will lay 1-4 eggs in the nest that will hopefully hatch into chicks.
These feathers were thought to be so elegant that hunters would shoot the birds right off the nest just to harvest the long feathers. Many women in the late 1800s and early 1900s displayed the feathers in their hats. This led to the Great Egrets near extinction. It was not until 1910 that plume-hunting was banned and the Great Egret began to recover.
